Why 6, 7 and 8-speed share a chain

Chains get narrower as speed counts rise, because the sprockets pack closer together. At 6, 7 and 8 speeds the spacing is close enough that one width serves all three. From 9-speed upwards, each count needs its own.

Fitting it

The supplied chain is shortened to your bike. Every drivetrain manufacturer publishes a method for setting length, and the methods differ enough that following the wrong one leaves you a full link out. Use the instructions for your own derailleur.
